Rebetiko Jam
The evenings are organised by our friends,
a musical collective 'Rebettingham'.
"Rebetiko" briefly can be described
as the urban popular song of the Greeks.
Their performance is a mix
of "Rebetiko" and "Laïko".
"Rebetiko" briefly can be described
as the urban popular song
of the Greeks, especially the poorest,
from the late 19th century to the 1950s.
"Laïko", pronounced [lai̯ˈko],
is a Greek music genre composed
in Greek language in accordance
with the tradition of the people.
Also called "folk song" or "urban folk music" when used in context, it refers mostly
to the form it took in the period
from the 1950s to the 1980s.
